On a recent vacation in the Bahamas, we read about Guava Duff, a traditional Bahamian dessert. All the restaurants listed it on the menu. All the Bahamians spoke fondly of it. Only no one could actually produce it for us.
We heard many excuses: pastry chef on vacation; we sold out of it earlier today; too hot to make it this week. No Guava Duff for us. I actually had to google this elusive treat to learn what it is.
But it sure is a curious name, isn’t it? Maybe this is how fiction writers get inspiration for names of odd characters or mysterious places? Maybe all one needs to do is pay attention and even a vacation can be inspirational?
I hope so. Surrounded by soft sand and warm, turquoise waters, I did not write as much as I had hoped. It’s time to get off of my Guava Duff.
